PHOTOVOICE

In 2015, PlaceLab conducted photovoice research with a group of youth in the Beltzhoover community of Pittsburgh. Photovoice is a participatory action research (PAR) strategy which can contribute to youth mobilization for community change. The strategy can enable youth to record and vivify their community’s strengths and concerns, promote critical dialogue and knowledge about community issues through group discussion, and reach policy makers.

The following are photos taken by youth that captured good feelings about their places.

The following are photos taken by youth that captured bad feelings about their places.

The above photos are the outcome of a four-day group psychoeducation process during which youth captured images and reflected on them in conversation and writing. For more information on this project in Beltzhoover, see Gupta & Simms (2019) paper below. For a toolkit on implementing this in your community, click here.
